Description: Angelita Sanchez (1926-1994) Vintage San Ildefonso pottery bowl. Redware made by traditional coiled clay method, smoothed, fired, and stone-burnished to a high polish with sgrafitto background surrounding the Avanyu, water serpent design and symbolizes the importance of water to the Pueblo people. The Avanyu is the quardian of water and is believed to sustain life in the desert, also symbolizing the connection between the terrestrial and the heavenly. The lightning coming from the mouth of the Avanyu symoblizes thunderstorms that bring rain. It is also believed the Avanyu formed the Rio Grande river and its tributaries. The Avanyu design surrounds the upper shoulder of this pottery vase. Signed on the base "Angel Sanchez, San Ildelfonso."Circa: 1960's - 1970'sSize: 4" wide x 6.75" tallCondition: Excellent.
