Description: Method of payment Banded broadbill - Eurylaimus javanicus - Boschi-Petraroja-1863 Lithograph Hand-Colored SUBJECT/TOPIC: Banded broadbill - Eurylaimus javanicus Included is original descriptive page, in Italian. At bottom is a partial blind Italian library stamp, for great providence. The banded broadbill is a species of bird in the Eurylaimidae typical broadbill family found in Mainland Southeast Asia and the Greater Sunda Islands. It is sometimes split into two species, one including only the nominate subspecies, E. j. javanicus, and one including all the remaining subspecies. W NOTE: Print has typical period age and handling; rarely offered and great colors and detail; image area itself very nice These Civil War era, extraordinarily beautiful, hand-colored, Italian lithographs are one of the most desirable of all natural history prints. They are extremely difficult to find. Some have a beautiful hand-applied oval library stamp under the image, confirming its original possession by an Italian library. This lithograph is done in a style very popular with collectors at the present time and is referred to as Naive Art. Naive painters to not constitute a group or a school. This naïve style is characterized by a deliberate lack of sophisticated artistic technique. The use of color is not dictated by faithfulness to reality. While a tiger in the jungle may have black and gold stripes, a naïve artist may use black and blue. Subject matter is childlike or naïve. The naïve artist is free from artistic traditions. These artists have free range of imagination and fantasy sometimes with almost a surrealist effect. The so-called "psychological perspective" is a prominent feature of naïve painting. The relative size of objects and figures is determined by psychological interest without regard to natural proportions. This results in the perspective often being askew. HISTORICAL INFORMATION: This original antique hand-colored lithograph is from Boschi's/Petraroja's extremely rare work "Atlante Zoologico Popolare, opera Compilata Sui Più Recenti Lavori di Zoologia Italiani e Stranieri. (Popular Zoological Atlas, a Work Compiled from the Most Recent Works of Italian and Foreign Zoology), edited by Giovanni Boschi, lithographed by Raimondo Petraroja, Naples: 1863-1879. Raimondo Petraroja (lithograph artist) Antinori, A. di Lorenzo, et al. (after) Giovanni Boschi (editor) The set was originally published in eight volumes: the 1st one general, the 2nd volume of which covered primates and monkeys, the 3rd, mammals and cats, the 4th, marine mammals, echidnas and platypuses, the 5th and 6th, birds, the 7th, reptiles and fishes, and the 8th, insects, invertebrates, shells and mollusks. This work contains beautiful natural history lithographs of animals in their natural environment. The landscape settings are simple yet effective compositional devices but also convey general information about the creature's habitat. CONDITION The condition of the print is conservatively "good+" (upper left corner bend, minor edge & surface wear, occasional spotting and smudges). The colors are remarkable and vibrant on heavy-weight paper. Minor surface and edge wear; occasional spotting and smudging. Please INSPECT PHOTO. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.) While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
