The photographer Eikoh Hosoe's “Kamaitachi”, a collection of photographs of the butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, was published by Gendai Shicho-sha in 1969 and won the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize. Since then, reprints have been published in 2005 and a popular edition in 2009 (both by Seigensha), and it is now highly regarded in the history of world photography. This photo collection is the “Tashiro version” that was reorganized by the Tashiro Kamaitachi Art Museum in Akita Prefecture. It contains 17 photographs, and also includes photographs from Tokyo and Tsukuba, as well as an introduction by Shuzo Takiguchi, a poster by Tadanori Yokoo, and commentary. The “Kamaitachi Museum” will open in October 2016, with the aim of preserving for posterity the valuable photographs, the presence of the butoh dancers, and the scenery of the village as “Tashiro Village = Kamaitachi Village”.
