About the Book:The Morrisites were a religious sect that emerged in the 1860s in Utah, led by Joseph Morris, a self-proclaimed prophet who broke away from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Morris, originally from England, had immigrated to the United States and joined the LDS Church but soon began to claim new revelations that were not accepted by the mainstream LDS leadership. In 1861, he established his own group in South Weber, Utah, attracting several hundred followers who believed in his prophetic visions and his interpretation of the scriptures. The Morrisites' communal lifestyle and distinctive beliefs quickly led to tensions with the surrounding Mormon community and the territorial government. Morris taught that the Second Coming of Christ was imminent and that his followers should prepare for it by gathering together and living in unity. The group’s practices, including shared property and communal living, along with Morris' denunciation of Brigham Young and other LDS leaders, exacerbated conflicts. In 1862, these tensions culminated in a violent confrontation known as the Morrisite War. Territorial authorities, responding to allegations of kidnapping and illegal detainment within the Morrisite community, dispatched a militia to the group’s settlement. The ensuing standoff resulted in several deaths, including that of Joseph Morris. After the violent suppression of the Morrisite community, many of the surviving followers were either imprisoned or scattered. The group did not recover from the loss of their leader and the dispersal of their community. However, the legacy of the Morrisites continued to influence Utah's religious landscape. Some former Morrisites joined other sects, while others integrated back into mainstream Mormonism or moved away. The Morrisite War remains a notable episode in the history of religious dissent in the American West, highlighting the complexities and challenges of maintaining religious unity and authority in a rapidly growing and diverse society.
