Description: Since this manual was first published, a small musical revolution has taken place in the USA. The revival of interest in folk music has spread widely, and along with it, the 5-string banjo really has made a comeback - often due to the music of the young people who bought copies of this book. At the same time, without the help of this or any book, thousands have used the old folk method of Listen - Watch - and Try, to teach themselves the sparkling banjo styles of such musicians as Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, and other bluegrass banjo pickers. (See page 38). In this third edition I have tried to repair some of the numerous typographical errors in the earlier ed-itions. Nearly every chapter has been enlarged, and the appendix has been brought up to date, in order to mention some of the other banjo books available now, such as ones by my sister Peggy, and by Billy Faier. Unfortunately, since the book is now seventy-two pages instead of forty, the price had to go up too. The book being bigger also, unfortunately, increases the greatest danger: that the beginner will try to learn it all at once. This is the surest recipe for failure. As Scruggs himself writes, "A good point to remember is, do not try to learn too much at one time. If it is only making a few chords, do that over and over until you can do that with very little effort. " With this book, leaf through it quickly, light on to the chapter vou are most interested in, and don't feel a bit badiv about ignoring the rest. Don't be like the hungry boy in the cafeteria who loaded his tray with far more than he could eat. Lastly, let me thank many friends for criticisms
